The Chapel Shelter, one of the original structures in the park, had long been a beloved picnic pavilion for North Side residents. A few years ago, the shelter was boarded up and closed to the public due to severe termite damage. Lacking in beauty and functionality, it was slated to be torn down. The PPC and the City saved it from demise by making it a priority project of the Regional Parks Master Plan, published in 2001 as a 20-year blueprint for parks restoration.
