Riverview Park features a maze of wooded areas and beautiful trees.  Unfortunately, many of the plants that create the forest canopy are invasive and have begun to choke out the park's biodiversity.  PPC and the Urban EcoStewards have begun installing native plants, including seven swamp white oaks, in preparation for the removal of large quantities of garlic mustard and knotwood.  A new restoration area in Mairdale, near the park entrance, will be completed soon.

A volunteer day in 2005 uncovered a historic collection of lilacs in the area behind the chapel shelter.  About 100 lilac trees and shrubs were on the verge of dying out due to the shade from invasive Siberian elm trees.  The first phase of rejuvenative pruning took place last year, and the years to come will see these beautiful and fragrant plants return to their former glory.
