BioBlitz
From 1997 to 2001, The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the City of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History sponsored four BioBlitzes. Each BioBlitz was a two-day event in spring or summer, designed to provide a "snapshot" of the parks' biodiversity. Scientists from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the local institutions cataloged as many plants, animals and insects as possible in the park in a 24-hour period. Their research yielded important baseline information about the parks' ecosystems and is helpful for the development of restoration projects. The BioBlitz in Frick gave a species count of 1,471; Highland - 967; Riverview - 1,164; and Schenley - 1,408.
