In its heyday, Pittsburghers visited Panther Hollow valley to escape noisy city life, go fishing, or relax on a small paddle boat. But today there are no boaters and no boathouse. The lake has silted in from soil that eroded off the adjacent hillsides. The boathouse was torn down in the 1970s. Invasive species have choked out native flora, and the habitat has become inhospitable to wild life. But there is hope. PPC has been working with numerous stakeholders, ecological experts, and the community to revitalize this treasured park land. PPC is working to establish easier, safer access to the valley and to ecologically restore the entire area, starting at the high hillsides and working down to the lake. These are the essential first steps to eventually dredging and restoring the lake and rebuilding the boathouse. For more information, contact PPC at 412-682-7275.
