City High Urban EcoStewards
You can improve our parks by becoming a City High Urban EcoSteward with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.
Urban EcoStewards (UES) are committed volunteers who have an invaluable role in protecting our urban green spaces. City Charter UES will participate in trainings and service learning for two trimesters during the 2009-2010 school year.
Our goals:

To engage youth in urban environmental stewardship

To help restore urban ecosystems

To have fun while making a real difference for Pittsburgh’s parks
What students can expect to do as Urban EcoStewards:

Connect with local green space
-
Learn about urban ecosystems
-
Increase scientific observation skills
-
Complete 10th grade service learning requirements
-
Develop understanding of urban forest benefits for human community
-
Develop understanding of human impacts on urban forests and parks
-
Contribute to the improvement of parks through hands-on restoration projects
-
Work and learn outside in all weather (sessions will be cancelled only for extreme conditions)
What we are looking for in participating students:

Commitment to making a difference for our local environment
-
Willingness to get dirty and work hard in an outdoor setting
-
Demonstrated ability to behave responsibly in group setting off school grounds
-
Enjoyment of outdoors
How to participate:
-
Students must apply to become City High Urban EcoStewards
-
All 10th grade students (teams A,B and C) are allowed to apply

20 students will be selected
-
Participants will be selected by Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and City High staff
-
Students will be notified about selection by January 6, 2010

The City High Urban EcoStewards will miss 1 afternoon (12:00 to 3:45) of regular class time per month to participate

The program will run during the 2nd & 3rd trimester of the 2009-2010 school year

Two City High staff will bring students to the park by public transportation
-
Students will be met by Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy staff who will lead training & work sessions
