Winter Gathering

Crew Leader Training

Learn best practices for leading volunteer crews of 5-15 people, then sign-up and use your experience to help our organizations on volunteer days.

Erosion Control

Learn how the geology of Pittsburgh’s hillsides make erosion a regional problem and practice techniques you can use to prevent gullies and landslides on your site. John Buck will be on hand to explain the science behind landslides and erosion, and lead a hike to see examples and what we can do to help prevent them. There's free parking at Anderson Playground around the corner from the Schenley Park Visitor Center.

Spring Invasives

Learn how and when to effectively identify and remove common invasive plants in the spring and hear tips to differentiate them from their native lookalikes.

Wildflower Walk & Campfire

Frick Environmental Center, 2005 Beechwood Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15217

Join us for a hike through Frick Park to identify our region’s spring wildflowers. Afterward, enjoy a hot dog and marshmallow roast around the campfire.

Summer Gathering

Join us for food and fellowship as we kayak around Sycamore Island and learn how to identify native trees and shrubs.

Acid Mine Drainage

Acid mine drainage resulting from Pittsburgh’s legacy of coal and steel production can drastically impact the pH of soil and waterways. Learn what we can do to help.

Learn how you can properly select, plant and protect trees and shrubs for long term success on your site. EcoStewards are eligible to receive a FREE tree.

Info for Volunteers

What to bring: Long pants, closed-toe shoes with good tread, all-weather clothing, a reusable water bottle (if you have one).

What will be provided: All necessary tools, gloves, materials, snacks, and instruction.

What to expect:  Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy volunteer work days are typically 4 hours long, rain or shine, and involve some type of ecological restoration work such as planting trees or wildflowers, controlling erosion, building trails, managing invasive species, or cleaning up dumpsites. We’ll teach you everything you need to know about safety and technique, provide you with tools and materials, and help you make a difference in our amazing parks. Expect to have fun, meet people who love the outdoors, and get dirty!
